This 14-day adventure safari features four of East Africa’s top travel experiences: gorilla trekking in Uganda, Cultural interactions, Big 5 game viewing and relaxation at the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi.

In addition to the life-changing experience that you’ll have with the Gorillas & pygmy people, you will also be able to go on a Big 5safari, chimpanzee trek, birding and Boat cruises on the River Nile & the spectacular Kazinga Channel.

Day 1: Welcome to Uganda

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by our driver/guide who will thereafter transfer you to your hotel in Kampala.

Day 2: To Murchison Falls/ Evening Wildlife by land

Depart Kampala heading to the North West of Uganda to Murchison Falls N.P- Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area.

En route, you’ll stopover at Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a rhino trek. This Rhino Reserve is a true success story after the extreme poaching that killed the last rhino in Uganda in 1982. Doing this guided trek gets you “up close and personal” to these special animals that are among “Africa’s Big Five

After trekking Rhinos, you’ll have lunch, and then proceed to check into Murchison Falls National Park.

Before checking in at your lodge, you’ll drive to the top of the powerful Murchison Falls (Baker’s summit) to marvel at the spectacular Nile dropping in a wave of rapids into a 7metre wide Rock gorge on its way to the Albert.

Day 3: Wildlife by land and by water

Today you will wake up early in the morning hours where animals are the most active, the sun is not yet so bright and temperatures are cooler. It offers the best time to spot wild animals. You’ll cross the Nile with a small ferry as you go out on a game drive to explore the northern part of the park.

Come eye-to-eye with the African animal kingdom: elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, different species of antelope and many tropical birds may all be spotted during the game drive. So keep your eyes open, they are all there in Murchison Falls National Park! Once the game drive commences, you’ll once again cross back to the Southern bank of the Nile to your lodge for a late breakfast & lunch as you please.

After lunch, you will take a boat safari up the Nile River to Murchison Falls. Carefully watched by crocodiles, hundreds of hippos, buffaloes, water birds, monkeys and all the other thirsty wildlife that the Nile attracts, you will reach the base of the 43-meter high Falls which approach with a thunderous sound.

Optional activity: Hot Air Balloon Safari:
Nothing on earth is quite like the powerful Murchison Falls. Flying over the largest protected area in a hot air balloon allows you the pleasure of experiencing her beauty and power first-hand. There is an astonishing range of activities from sunrise/post-sunrise, hot air balloon safari with/ without bush breakfast, Sunset hot air balloon safari, short rides for large groups and students and bird-eye view.

Experience the wildlife of Murchison Falls NP in a unique way. Wake up early to catch the sunrise, as you silently fly over the plains of the Park. Admire the herds of buffaloes, elephants and enjoy the serene tranquility of the African bush…

You will take off early at dawn for a balloon flight that lasts for approximately 1 hour. Rise as the suns rise and float in whatever direction the winds of the morning take you. Fly higher than the trees and hills and enjoy the best of Uganda, with many great photo opportunities of the scenery and wildlife below.

After a smooth landing, you can celebrate this amazing adventure with a glass of sparkling juice before returning to your lodge.

The hot air balloon safari costs $380 per person inclusive of the bush breakfast.

Day 4: Murchison Falls National Park – To Hoima

After breakfast, take a leisurely drive to Hoima passing via Lake Albert, view fishing villages and local communities.

Day 5: To Queen Elizabeth N.P.

Today morning, you will embark on a Safari route that traces the Western Rift Valley in the heart of Africa to the South West of Uganda through many hills, surrounded by small villages, picturesque green tea plantations and beautiful landscapes of Fort Portal. This part of Uganda is characterized by the presence of numerous crater lakes of volcanic origin fairy–like surroundings and the charming Green Tea plantations. Proceed to Kasese District- home of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is the oldest& second largest National Park in Uganda, It is located at the base of the massive Rwenzori Mountains, adjacent to lakes Edward& George, covered by Savannah plains that provide an abundance of Game viewing like; Elephants that trumpet when you get too close, lazy Leopards laying in the sun, abundant Gazelle and buck, Lions, Buffaloes, Hippos and others. You will arrive at your lodge late in the afternoon. Feel free to indulge in an evening game drive

Day 6: Chimpanzee tracking & afternoon Launch Cruise

In the morning, embark on your Chimpanzee tracking excursion. Kyambura Gorge boasts many primate species, including our delightful cousins- the Chimpanzees. At this moment, in Uganda, there are approximately 4,950 Chimps left in the wild, which makes this forest one of the good places to spot some of the chimpanzees in Africa! During the excursion, your ranger will point out the other species living in the forest, including birds, flora, and fauna.

2:00 pm you will take a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel- a natural channel which connects Lake Edward to Lake George. View Buffaloes, Elephants, Waterbucks, Crocodiles and the highest concentration of Hippos plus a variety of colorful species of Water birds like Crested Eagles, Pelicans and Cormorants – an Amazing diverse collection of the African Animal Kingdom which comes to the waterhole to drink or bathe. This will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your tour.

Optional activity: Hot Air Balloon Safari:

For visitors who yearn to get up close to wild African fauna, a research trip is a rewarding adventure. This new and unique experience allows visitors to actively participate in monitoring some of the lions in the park, using locator devices and learn habituation calls, as well as monitoring weather, surroundings, and behavior. The results are added to researchers’ databases, contributing valuable information to the overall understanding of wildlife ecology – and helping to conserve this wonderful ecosystem. This will as well gives you a 95% chance to see the lions!

The number of people on each outing is limited in order to reduce stress on the animals and to increase the quality of the experience for visitors.

Experiential tours last between one and three hours. They usually take place in the early morning or evening, or occasionally at night. All activities must be booked through the Visitor Information Centre in Mweya at least 24 hours in advance.

Day 7: Game Drive/ Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth N.P

Early morning cup of Coffee, go for a game drive in time to see the sun rise. You will search for all the wildlife in the park; Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Waterbuck, Leopard, Uganda Kob, Warthog, etc.

You’ll later have a leisurely breakfast before heading out for your final game drive through the beautiful wilderness of Ishasha plains that are a part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. A game drives through the open savannah of Acacia on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley will bring you up close to the ‘Tree climbing Lions’ and other wild animals.

You’ll spend the night at a lovely eco lodge in the ishasha wilderness.

Day 8: To Kisoro

You’ll proceed to the breathtaking; evergreen mountain country – deep to the southwest of Uganda. You will see a great countryside of bamboo forest and have great views of the landscape.

Day 9: Gorilla Tracking in Mt. Mgahinga Gorilla Park

Today is the big day… Prepare yourself for an encounter with one of Uganda’s gentle giants: the rare Mountain Gorilla. For most people, this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda.

You will be required to wake up early in the morning then you will be led to the visitor’s reception for a briefing to the park, where you are allocated guides before heading into the forest. Proceed to the forest in search of the endangered Mountain Gorillas.

Mt. Mgahinga Gorilla Park is part of the Virunga massif, which comprises of Rwanda’s Parc De Volcans, DRC’s Virunga National Park and Uganda’s Mt. Mgahinga Gorilla Park. It’s in this park where you are able to trek the ‘Nyakagezi Gorilla family’ that freely roams between Uganda, Rwanda & DRC.

The Gorillas you will track belong to one of nine habituated family groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day. Your trek will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas’ habitat. En route, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots.

The time taken to track the Gorillas can take as little as 2 hours! Once the Gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a Mountain Gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Uganda’s very own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.

Day 10: Batwa pygmies- To L. Bunyonyi

Today morning you will re-enter the forest for the ‘Batwa’ (pygmies) Cultural Trail. You’ll meet members of the Twa tribe, who are thought to be the longest-standing inhabitants of the Great Lakes region. Their history can be traced back at least 4000 years and they are renowned as dancers and storytellers. You will learn more about the Batwa’s hunting and gathering techniques, their goddess and their musical performances.

The Batwa Trail is unique in a way that it showcases the authentic culture of the original inhabitants of the Mghahinga forest who’s lives mainly depended on the natural habitat. While exploring the trail, you experience the naturally endowed forest through a rare viewpoint of the local people. The experience comes along with different unique demonstrations on how the pygmies used to extract local herbs that were used for healing different diseases, traditional ways of fetching water using locally made bamboo mugs and construction of grass huts.

The highly rewarding cultural tour ends with staged, authentic cultural performance organized by the Batwa community at the gate of the Garama cave, which was highly regarded as a ceremonial place for the cultural leaders of the Batwa community.

After the Batwa interaction, you will bid farewell to the beautiful Mt.Mgahinga forest. After two days of forest hiking, you will no doubt enjoy relaxing by the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi dotted by many evergreen islands and rolling hills. BBC describes L.Bunyonyi as the most beautiful lake in Africa.
 Day 11: Relaxation by L. Bunyonyi

The landscape in this part of Uganda is breathtaking; evergreen mountain country commonly referred to as the “little Switzerland” characterized by terraced hills of cultivation, Ankole long horned cattle, Coffee and Tea plantations, Lakes and evergreen beautiful scenery. Most clients will cherish some relaxing moments on the shores and Islands of this peaceful and beautiful Lake. Today, you sit back and enjoy this paradise lake dotted with small Bird Islands, later in the evening, watch the sunset on its colored shores.

Lake Bunyonyi is bilharzia-free and safe for swimming, sailing, and canoeing.

You will stay in a simple but comfortable furnished safari banda with a view of the lake

Day 12: Relaxation by L. Bunyonyi

Once again, you have the day to simply sit back and relax.

Optional activities on Lake Bunyonyi

  • Canoe tours to the lake’s many beautiful islands and villages, Hiking tours to nearby forests, waterfalls, villages, and craftsmen, and along the spectacular Bunyonyi ridge, Visits to local schools and community projects. Interpretive birding tours, Self-guided canoeing around the lake (Picnic & island-hop at your own pace. A detailed lake map is available.)

Day 13: Return to Kampala

Today, you’ll bid farewell to the beautiful evergreen countryside, en-route, you’ll make a stop at the Uganda Equator and proceed to Kampala.

Day 14: Winging your way home

After all the fun and adventure in the beautiful ‘Pearl of Africa’, today you make your way to Entebbe International airport for your departure flight home.

  • Long sleeve shirts and trousers (old clothes recommended as they can get very dirty and torn from the thorns and jungle foliage)
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses (although once in the jungle you are in the shade)
  • Gardening gloves to protect your hand from the thorns and vines
  • Good, comfortable sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support
  • Getters or Long socks to tuck your trousers into
  • Rain jacket
  • Camera with lenses of different mill meters
  • Waterproof rucksack (or plastic bags inside your rucksack)
  • Plenty of water (the camp provides a packed lunch and lots of water
  • For evenings at the camp, it is worth taking a warm fleece, as evenings can be chilly. For the daytime light, casual clothes generally suffice.
